Job Summary
A panel of Resident Medical Officers (RMO) will provide a 24-hour medical service within the hospitals. They will assist with the daily review of post-operative inpatients, assist with the preparation of patients for surgery, asses any changes in the patient's condition, initiating any emergency treatment where necessary, and informing the consultant immediately. The RMO is also expected to act as a team leader in a cardiac arrest situation.
There will also be time allocated to develop skills in education at the Kingsbridge Training Academy, basic surgical skills as a surgical assistant or learning aesthetic surgical techniques. This will be agreed individually for each doctor.
Key Responsibilities:
Emergency:
- To be familiar with the use and location of emergency equipment.
- To lead in adult and paediatric life support.
- To respond immediately to clinical emergencies and undertake emergency investigations and procedures in accordance with hospital policy and as directed by the patient’s consultant.
Ward Duties:
- Be always present and contactable within hospital at all times.
- Maintain individual contact with patients, carry out a daily review of patients and other duties detailed by the individual hospital.
- Attend communication (handover) rounds as required.
- Update clinical notes on patients that remain inpatient for more than 24 hours or as identified by the surgical/ward teams according to best practice for record keeping. Continue this for such patients on a daily basis.
- Respond promptly to the request of all medical staff (Consultants and other doctors, nurses) to see any patients within the hospital and to advise or start any treatment as indicated.
- Undertake specific medical procedures on patients within all departments in the hospital as requested by medical and nursing staff: cannulation, commencing IV infusions, urinary catheterisations, administration of IV drugs, ECG, phlebotomy, etc.
- Check blood sample results and take necessary actions.
- Assist with patient admission, if requested.
- Prescribe medicines to take home and complete discharge letters as requested according to local policies as well as prescribing patient’s routine medications, thromboprophylaxis etc.
- Before going off duty ensure written appropriate communication to the oncoming RMO specifying any requirements of individual patients.
Responsibility to Consultants:
- Inform Consultants of any significant change in the condition of their patients and any emergency procedures undertaken.
- Follow the instructions of consultants for their specific regime for each individual patient.
- Initiate and alter in-patient prescriptions at consultant's request.
- In the event of death of a patient inform the consultant, and the patient's GP (if the consultant is unable to do so).
- Advise the Consultant immediately about who threatens to discharge themselves against medical / nursing advice.
- See and examine discharged post-operative patients, on requests of the consultant.
Other Duties:
- RMOs must not routinely perform the role of surgical assistant in the operating department whilst allocated to ward duties.
- Perform clinical procedures as requested by consultant medical staff.
- Provide first aid to staff or visitors inline with clinical expertise and offer appropriate advice in respect of treatment, to include advising attendance at an NHS ED.
- Participate in clinical audit and implementation of clinical governance.
- RMO's are expected to always look smart and presentable and wear a name badge when attending patients.
- RMOs will be appointed to the Kingsbridge Healthcare Group. Where possible it is expected that RMOs will become familiar with duties in both Kingsbridge Private Hospital Belfast and Kingsbridge Private Hospital Northwest however they will have a main base in Kingsbridge Private Hospital Northwest.
- RMOs will be asked to help cover short notice absences if one of their colleagues needs to take urgent leave.
Administrative Duties:
- Provide evidence of annual appraisal/ARCP and revalidation. Inform the Medical Director of any serious issues that arise from these.
- Inform the Medical Director immediately of any restrictions on practice.
- Comply with the hospital consent and confidentiality policy maintain comprehensive clerking notes and treatment records for all patients.
- Read understand and adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
- Complete hospital administrative documentation as required.
- Be familiar with Kingsbridge Healthcare Group’s clinical policies.
- Be aware of Kingsbridge Healthcare Group’s clinical risk programme and report clinical incidents, drug errors and near misses.
- Ensure correct procedures are carried out in respect of patients discharging themselves, deaths in care and coroner's requirements.
Health & Safety and Quality Assurance:
- Be familiar, understand and adhere to all Health and Safety regulations including evacuation policy and the RMO's role in such an event.
- Participate/assist/attend in-house trainings and scenarios as requested. This may include: fire safety, infection control, manual handling, blood transfusion etc.
- Be aware of the promotion of effective customer care and public relations in order to promote the good reputation of the hospital.
