Knee pain can be debilitating and can hold you back from enjoying life. Normal day to day activities can leave you exhausted and in severe pain causing daily discomfort that can also affect your sleep at night.

At Kingsbridge Private Hospital we have access to some of the best orthopaedic knee surgeons in Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Why is my knee painful?

Your knee joint is made up by the lower end of your thigh bone (femur) and the upper end of your shin bone (tibia). These normally glide over each other easily because they are covered by smooth layer of cartilage. If your cartilage becomes damaged by injury or worn away by arthritis, it can make your joint painful and stiff affecting the normal movement of your knee.

Knee Replacement Surgery

If other pain relief options have been unsuccessful or depending on the severity of the damage to your knee, your consultant at Kingsbridge Private Hospital may recommend a knee replacement. A new knee joint will help to improve your mobility and reduce pain.

Depending on the condition of your knee joint, you may need to have part, or all, of your knee joint replaced. If you have arthritis just in one area of your knee joint, usually the inside part of the joint, you may be offered a partial knee replacement (a unicondylar knee replacement). However, a total knee replacement is more common.

In a total knee replacement the artificial knee parts usually consist of curved metal (on the femoral side) and a metal platform (on the tibial side) with a polyethylene insert or spacer in between. A knee replacement can last for up to 20 years.

Alternatives to Knee Replacement Surgery

Your Orthopaedic consultant at Kingsbridge Private Hospital in Belfast will usually only recommend that you have surgery if non-surgical treatments, such as physiotherapy and exercise, medicines, pain clinic injections or using physical aids like a walking stick, no longer help to reduce your pain or improve your mobility.

Alternative surgical procedures include:
  • Arthroscopy (if the arthritis isn't too sever)
  • Osteotomy (where your leg bones are cut and re-set to reduce the wear if damage is mostly on one particular side)

Your consultant will explain all options that are available to you at your appointment.

Mr Molloy is a gentleman who puts you at ease right away and ensured my last procedure went smoothly! From start to finish all the hospital staff go above and beyond to make your stay as comfortable and stress free as possible. The facilities are brilliant with the rooms spacious and modern to recover in. Keep up the good work!" Ms Roulston, Kingsbridge Patient
"Can’t praise Kingsbridge Private Hospital enough!! I had an operation a couple of weeks ago and I was so well looked after. My surgeon Mr Rashid was fantastic, and the nursing staff was also fabulous. I found they communicated very well to each other, so everyone knew when my meds were due, my allergies etc. They were so kind, so lovely, constantly checked to see how I was i.e. my temperature etc. The food was fabulous and the catering staff very helpful having had an operation were very happy to accommodate ... Thank you to all!" Ms Cheong, Kingsbridge Patient
"Currently just back from recovery on the ward. I have just had ACL reconstructive surgery on my left knee. What can I say? This place is brilliant. I arrived at 8.35am, taken to the ward at 8.45am (my admission time was 9am). Tended to by a lovely Nurse. Dr Roger Wilson spoke to me around 9.45am, in Theatre for 10am, recovery for 11.10am and now currently back on ward. These guys are awesome. From the consultant to anaesthetist to nurses to cater assistants. Absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much. I am so grateful to everyone at Kingsbridge for the service." Mr McNicholl, Kingsbridge Patient
"EXCELLENT - Had surgery today under the very caring Dr Stewart and her team. I cannot thank her enough for all she’s done for me over the past few months. Everything was explained to me in detail and all my care was considerate, professional and compassionate. Everyone I’ve met today has been beyond kind from Will the Anaesthetist, the Nurses and theatre staff, the catering staff - there has been no exception. Thank you all for taking care of me so well today - look forward to getting home tomorrow x" Mrs McAleavey, Kingsbridge Patient
