A Thoracic Surgeon practices in the surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the chest (the thorax). Thoracic surgeons perform surgery for conditions affecting the lungs, chest wall and diaphragm.
Thoracic surgery involves surgery for both benign diseases, such chest wall deformities, infections of the chest or lungs, as well as removal of tumours or cancers of the chest.

Mediastinal surgery
Oesophageal surgery is performed for conditions of the oesophagus. Oesophagus is an organ in vertebrates which consists of a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach. During swallowing food passes from the mouth through the pharynx into the oesophagus and travels to the stomach.
The oesophagus passes through the thorax and enters abdomen through a hole in the diaphragm. It is usually about 25–30 cm long and connects the mouth to the stomach.
