Mr Niall McGonigle’s Profile
Mr McGonigle completed his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2011 in Belfast. Following completion, he was appointed as a consultant to the world famous Harefield Hospital, London as a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon.
Within 2 years, he was the Lead Thoracic Surgeon and Chair for Cancer Services until he returned to Belfast in 2017. He has a special interest in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and performs the majority of surgeries via ‘keyhole’. He has a special interest in lung cancer, mediastinal tumours, pectus deformity, hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) and chest wall injuries from trauma.
As the Northern Ireland Director of The Royal College of Surgeons in England (RCSEng), he is an advocate for professionalism in surgery and outcomes from surgery.
Until recently was the Chair of the Lung Cancer Clinical reference Group for Northern Ireland (NiCAN).
He is also a keen educator in surgery having formerly been the Training Programme Director (TPD) for Core Surgery in North-West London and TPD for Core Surgery in Northern Ireland & Deputy Head of School of Surgery (NIMTDA). He is the current Training Programme Director for Cardiothoracic Training in Northern Ireland
Mr McGonigle is a regular invited speaker and chair at The European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) and The British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG).
His role as a leading surgeon results in regular media appearances to represent surgeons and advocate for patients.
Outside of medicine he is currently completing a law degree and regularly undertakes medico-legal work for personal injury and potential negligence.
