Job Summary
We are looking to appoint a dynamic registered practitioner with proven experience to lead with the day-to-day running of the ward. As Ward Manager you will carry a clinical portfolio in addition to general management responsibilities.
To actively participate in the provision of a high quality, effective and efficient service. The post holder will ensure that high standards of service and care are maintained in accordance with the Company ethos and practice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Co-ordinate the quality and management of nursing care, patient care and the clinical post-operative environment with full responsibility for staffing. Participate fully with the multidisciplinary team and when required undertake direct patient care. Manage and direct the delivery of clinical services within the ward, ensuring it complies with statutory regulations, current legislation and meets quality standards.
- Lead Ward staff in the provision of safe and effective care of patients undergoing elective surgery.
- Lead in the management of the Ward, developing and implementing operational policies and procedures to achieve service objectives, enabling the provision of the highest standards of care and services.
- Maintain an organizational culture that fosters collaborative working among all staff groups, to ensure a focused commitment to delivering quality services and outcomes.
- Comply with Corporate Governance structure in keeping with the principles and standards set out by the Hospital.
- Support the Hospital’s culture of collaborative, flexible cross-team working and commitment to delivering quality services and outcomes.
- Adhere to Infection Control Policies always assuring compliance with all defined Infection Control standards and challenge poor practice that could lead to the transmission of infection.
Nursing Organisation:
- To support other team members in their professional work.

- To assist the Hospital General Manager with the cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery.

- To participate in the development of practice guidelines within the Hospital.
- To participate in research activities within the clinical setting.
- To promote and implement evidenced based practices within the Hospital as appropriate and relevant
- To be aware of the patient as an individual and adopt a holistic approach in the delivery of care.
- To risk assess all patients and carry out manual handling as per Hospital policy.
Communication:
- To communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team throughout the Hospital.
- To co-ordinate patient care and liaise effectively with other disciplines involved.
- To always maintain patient confidentiality.
- To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives regarding their care and treatment.
- To adhere to guidelines for 'Records and Record Keeping’.
Health and Safety:
- To be aware of the Hospital policies and practice in accordance with regulations.
- To attend annual statutory training in fire prevention, manual handling, infection control and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation.
- To report to the Hospital General Manager and Hospital Quality and Accreditation Manager any reportable incident, accidents involving either staff, patients, or visitors.
- To report any defective or faulty equipment to the Estate’s Department as appropriate.
- To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Ward.
Education:
- To assist with and participate in the in-service training programme (including staff orientation induction programme) to enhance patient care.
- To maintain and up-date own professional development.
- To report on study days/courses attended to other members of the ward.
- To rotate onto various shifts (as required) for professional update, to ensure statutory and personnel development is achieved in line with the Personal Development Plan agreed during the annual appraisal.
- Ensures appropriate clinical supervision is given to all staff in advance of annual appraisals
Management:
- Organises own time and that of junior staff, leads team and allocates work, manages, and develops staff.
- Plans staff Off Duty rotas/Annual Leave and study leave to always ensure that there is adequate nursing cover and appropriate skill mix.
- Participates in recruitment and selection of staff.
- Effectively manages sickness and absenteeism and takes appropriate action in line with hospital policy.
- Ensures effective and efficient use of resources and cost control.
- Undertaking discharge planning involving coordinating other agencies.
- Involved in the staff appraisals annually for the Ward staff.
- Identifies the learning needs of the team and ensures programs are in place to meet these needs
Person Specification:
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Registered Nurse
- 3-5 years post registration experience
- 2 years supervisory/charge role experience
Desirable
- Previous experience in a leadership role

- Knowledge of current standards within the service
- Integration of teleheath in nursing practice
- Effective Clinical decision-making
- Reflective safe practice

- Human factors and ergonomics of technology use
- Willingness to undertake training and development, when necessary.

- Further education (diploma/modules/degree).
