Vaginal repair surgery (colporrhaphy) is a procedure that helps to restore the strength and function of the vaginal muscles and tissues, often after childbirth, ageing or pelvic floor problems.
The muscles and the ligaments that support your vagina and womb can become overstretched and weakened if you’re obese or after certain events, such as after childbirth or the menopause. This can cause your vagina and womb to drop down. Your bladder and bowel can also bulge into your vagina. The bulge of the womb, bladder or bowel into your vagina is known as a prolapse.
A vaginal prolapse can be repaired with vaginal repair surgery at Kingsbridge Private Hospital by our team of experienced experts. The operation helps to strengthen the walls of your vagina and will help to ease your symptoms.
Vaginal Repair Surgery costs vary depending on the procedure and your personal treatment plan. We’ll give you a clear price guide upfront and explain what’s included.

Vaginal repair surgery can reduce the symptoms linked to a weakened vaginal wall. It may relieve discomfort, ease bowel movements, reduce the feeling of pressure, and improve sexual function. Many women also find that repairing the supporting tissues helps them return to normal daily activities with greater comfort.
The benefits of surgery vary depending on your individual condition, but the main aim is to restore support, reduce symptoms, and improve quality of life.
At Kingsbridge, you’ll be in the expert hands of UK and Ireland’s top gynaecologists
The main type of vaginal repair surgery is a posterior repair, which focuses on tightening the back wall of the vagina and repairing the supporting tissues. In some cases, additional procedures may be carried out at the same time if other parts of the pelvic floor are affected.
Your surgeon will discuss the most suitable approach for your needs and explain whether a combined procedure is recommended. The aim is to choose the option that best addresses your symptoms and restores proper support.
Knowing what happens at each stage of vaginal repair surgery can help you feel prepared and more at ease. Here’s what you can expect:
Before Surgery
You will meet your surgeon to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and the details of the surgery. You may need tests such as blood work or a physical examination. Your surgeon will explain the risks and benefits, and you will have the chance to ask questions.
During Surgery
The surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. The surgeon makes an incision in the vaginal wall, repairs and strengthens the weakened tissues, and then closes the incision with dissolvable stitches. The operation normally takes around one hour.
After Surgery
You may need to stay in hospital overnight. Some discomfort and swelling are common in the first few days, but pain relief will be provided. You should avoid heavy lifting and sexual activity for several weeks while healing takes place. Most women are able to return to normal daily activities within four to six weeks, depending on recovery.
