Sigmoidoscopy is a medical procedure that allows healthcare professionals to examine the lower part of the colon and rectum, collectively known as the sigmoid colon and rectum. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can help detect and diagnose various colorectal conditions, including colorectal cancer, polyps, and inflammatory bowel disease.

How Does Sigmoidoscopy Work?
- Preparation: Before the procedure, patients are typically required to empty their bowels completely. This often involves dietary restrictions and the use of laxatives or enemas to ensure a clear view of the colon and rectum during the examination.
- The Procedure: During sigmoidoscopy, a thin, flexible tube called a sigmoidoscope is inserted into the rectum and advanced through the sigmoid colon. The sigmoidoscope contains a light source and a small camera, allowing the healthcare provider to visualize the inside of the colon and rectum in real-time.
- Visual Examination: As the sigmoidoscope is carefully advanced, the healthcare provider examines the lining of the sigmoid colon and rectum for abnormalities. This may include looking for polyps, inflammation, or signs of cancer.
- Biopsy and Polyp Removal: If any suspicious areas are found, the healthcare provider can take tissue samples (biopsies) or remove polyps during the procedure. These samples are sent to a laboratory for further analysis.
- Completion: Once the examination is complete, the sigmoidoscope is slowly withdrawn, and the procedure is finished.
Why Is Sigmoidoscopy Important?
- Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide. Sigmoidoscopy can detect precancerous growths (polyps) and early-stage colorectal cancer when it’s most treatable.
- Polyp Removal: Not only does sigmoidoscopy detect polyps, but it also allows for their removal during the procedure. Removing precancerous polyps can prevent the development of colorectal cancer.
- Diagnostic Tool: Sigmoidoscopy can aid in the diagnosis of various colorectal conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and diverticulosis.
- Screening Frequency: Sigmoidoscopy is typically recommended every 5 years for individuals at average risk of colorectal cancer, making it a cost-effective and accessible screening option.
Sigmoidoscopy vs. Colonoscopy
It’s essential to differentiate sigmoidoscopy from colonoscopy, another common colorectal screening procedure. While both methods examine the colon, they have distinct differences:
- Sigmoidoscopy examines only the lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon and rectum).
- Colonoscopy examines the entire colon and is more comprehensive.
- Colonoscopy requires sedation, while sigmoidoscopy often does not.
- Colonoscopy may require a longer recovery time, whereas sigmoidoscopy typically allows for a quicker return to normal activities.
