Shoulder joint replacement can relieve long-term pain and improve the movement of your shoulder. It can also make everyday activities such as dressing, lifting, or reaching easier to manage. Many patients notice better sleep and increased independence following recovery.
The main benefit of surgery is restoring function and reducing pain when other treatments have not worked. This allows you to return to daily life with greater comfort and mobility.
At Kingsbridge, you’ll be in the expert hands of the UK and Ireland’s top orthopaedic consultants.
Different types of shoulder joint replacement are available depending on the condition of your joint. A total shoulder replacement replaces both the ball and socket with artificial parts. A partial replacement involves replacing only the ball of the joint. In some cases, a reverse shoulder replacement is advised, where the positions of the ball and socket are switched to improve strength and stability.
Your consultant will recommend the most suitable type based on your symptoms, shoulder function, and overall health.
Knowing what happens at each stage of shoulder replacement surgery can help you feel prepared and more at ease. Here’s what you can expect:
Before Surgery
You will have a consultation and assessment to review your symptoms, medical history, and overall health. Scans or X-rays may be taken to plan the surgery. Your consultant will explain the procedure and what to expect during recovery.
During Surgery
The operation is carried out under anaesthetic. The damaged parts of the shoulder joint are removed and replaced with artificial components. The surgery usually takes a few hours.
After Surgery
You will stay in hospital for a short period while your recovery begins. Pain relief and physiotherapy are provided to help you start moving the joint safely. Most patients wear a sling for support in the early stages. A rehabilitation programme is followed to restore movement and strength.
