Urology Referral

Once referred, our Urology Specialists will be able to consult on any problems you may have relating to the kidneys, bladder, male genitalia or prostate gland.

Blood tests or Imaging (MRI, CT, Ultrasound or X-Ray) scans may also be necessary. If there is an ongoing concern about potential prostate cancer, a biopsy may be required. This involves sampling prostatic tissue.

If the biopsy results confirm Prostate Cancer, a referral onto our specialist prostate cancer treatment service will be organised.

Choices of treatment available and appropriate to the individual patient will be discussed.

After a period of reflection on the options available, our patient advisor will then follow up with you. If you decide to proceed with treatment at Kingsbridge, at this stage a further review will be organised within a week.

Following this pathway will give you peace of mind and rapid access to our Oncology service if required.

Our Urologists can also explore bothersome urinary symptoms in both men and women. These can include storage symptoms (running more often or leakage or urine) and voiding symptoms (including poor flow and poor bladder emptying)

In some cases, our consultants will recommend non-invasive treatment such as prescriptions or adjustments to the patient’s lifestyle. However, some patients will require further investigation or surgery depending on the diagnosis.

Kingsbridge Prostate Clinic can facilitate other urological investigations & procedures including:

Diagnostics

  • Transperineal guided biopsymof the prostate
  • Ultrasound guided biopsy of prostate (TRUS)
  • Cystoscopy (flexible/local or general anaesthetic, small camera in the bladder)
  • Bladder biopsy if required

Treatments

  • TURP (Transurethral resection of the prostate)
  • Urolift (minimally invasive treatment for Benign Prostatic Enlargement)
  • Penile procedures (incl. circumcision)
  • Scrotal procedures (incl. vasectomy and hydrocoele repair)

SpaceOAR Hydrogel

Optional pre-treatment prior to Prostate Cancer Care such as Radiotherapy & Brachytherapy.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel has been designed to help reduce the radiation dose delivered to the rectum during prostate cancer radiation treatments by providing space between the rectum and the prostate.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel has been clinically shown to protect the quality of life of the patient by minimizing urinary, sexual and bowel side effects

Is it safe?
SpaceOAR Hydrogel intends to temporarily position the anterior rectal wall away from the prostate during radiotherapy for prostate cancer, reducing the radiation dose delivered to the anterior rectum.

The SpaceOAR Hydrogel is composed of biodegradable material and maintains space for the entire course of prostate radiotherapy treatment and is completely absorbed by the patient’s body over time.

What are the risks?
As with any medical treatment, there are some risks involved with the use of SpaceOAR Hydrogel. These will be discussed at your consultation before you make any decisions.

Patient Review

“As a patient who availed of SpaceOAR Hydrogel, I wish to convey my thanks to you and your team for looking after me so well. I was slightly nervous but was quickly relaxed by the professionalism and caring nature displayed by all the staff from reception to discharge. After the procedure and in the next few days I did not suffer any discomfort. While researching and sourcing this preventative treatment I quickly realized that the benefits clearly outweighed any risks. I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending this procedure. I described the procedure to others as “repeating the biopsies with fewer needles”. I felt nothing from the initial sharp scratch to completion. I do know that the best part of this is yet to come as I move forward towards radiotherapy. It will lessen the risk of collateral damage to my rectum and other unpleasant side effects. Once again thank you and your team for looking after me so well. It also was so good having this procedure in Northern Ireland.”
