Dr Garry Adair-Gilliland
Minor surgery at the GP clinic offers a straightforward way to remove superficial skin lesions using local anaesthetic, without the need for hospital admission. The procedure is carried out by an experienced GP and is suitable for many common skin concerns, helping you access timely treatment and, where needed, a confirmed diagnosis.
Patients can call 028 9066 7878 and quote ‘GP’ to connect with a dedicated GP admin team where you will be triaged and offered an appointment within the same day.
If the lesion needs to be removed, the minor surgery can take place immediately after assessment.
Knowing what to expect can help you prepare for minor surgery and support a smooth recovery. Your GP will guide you through each stage and provide clear advice tailored to your procedure.
Before the Procedure
Before minor surgery, you will have an appointment with a GP to assess the lesion and confirm that the procedure is suitable. You may be asked about allergies, medical conditions, and any medication you take, including blood thinning treatment. You should wear suitable clothing, remove jewellery near the treatment area, and arrange transport if needed. Your GP will advise you on any preparation required before your appointment.
During the Procedure
Minor surgery is carried out using local anaesthetic, so you remain awake while the area is numbed. The procedure usually lasts between 15 and 45 minutes. A small incision is made to remove the lesion, and electrocautery may be used to control bleeding. You should not feel pain, though you may notice pressure or movement. The wound is closed with stitches where required.
After the Procedure
After minor surgery, some discomfort, swelling, or bruising around the treated area is common and usually settles within a few days. You will receive advice on wound care, dressing changes, and stitch removal if needed. Strenuous activity should be avoided for up to a week. Most patients can return to driving the next day or soon after, depending on the site of the procedure and how you feel.
