Mr Tim Doyle
Elbow and shoulder surgery is a treatment option that helps address pain, stiffness, or injury in your elbow or shoulder joint when non-surgical methods are no longer effective.
We work hard to keep waiting times low, so you get the care you need when you need it most.
If you have ongoing elbow or shoulder pain, your GP will assess you and, if they think surgery is the right option, give you a referral letter to see a specialist.

Elbow and shoulder surgery can provide relief from pain that limits your activities. It can restore movement and strength, making it easier for you to carry out everyday tasks. Surgery may also improve stability in the joint, helping you use your arm with greater confidence.
By improving comfort and function, elbow surgery can support your recovery and allow you to return to your usual routine.
At Kingsbridge, you’ll be in the expert hands of the UK and Ireland’s top orthopaedic consultants.
Different surgical approaches are available depending on the cause of your elbow problem. These include arthroscopy, which uses small instruments to diagnose and treat conditions inside the joint, and open surgery for more complex repairs. Procedures may involve removing loose fragments, repairing tendons or ligaments, or replacing part or all of the joint with an artificial implant. Related shoulder procedures, such as rotator cuff repair and shoulder joint replacement, may also be discussed where appropriate, particularly if symptoms extend beyond the elbow.
Your consultant will recommend the most suitable option based on your condition and treatment goals.
Knowing what happens at each stage of elbow & shoulder surgery can help you feel prepared and more at ease. Here’s what you can expect:
Before Surgery
You will meet your consultant to discuss your condition and treatment plan. Tests such as X-rays or scans may be arranged to guide your surgery. You will also be advised on how to prepare, including any changes to medication.
During Surgery
Elbow surgery is usually carried out under general or regional anaesthetic. The type of operation depends on your condition and may involve arthroscopy or open surgery. The consultant will perform the necessary repair or replacement to restore function.
After Surgery
You may need to stay in hospital for a short time, depending on the complexity of the surgery. Your arm may be supported in a sling or bandage, and you will receive advice on pain management. Physiotherapy is often recommended to support recovery and restore movement. Follow-up appointments will monitor your progress.
