Audiology

With over 25 years of experience in hearing care, our independent specialists provide expert advice and access to the latest hearing aid technology, including discreet in-ear options, to help you find the best solution for your hearing needs.

A hearing test provides a measurement of the sensitivity of a person’s hearing across the full range of speech. The test will measure the quietest sound that can be heard several points across the speech range – this hearing test is termed an audiogram.

Your Audiologist at Kingsbridge North West Hospital will want to have a look into your ears to ensure there is no blockage (wax) or any reason the hearing test cannot be performed. A brief history of your hearing will be required and when you noticed problems, such as when did they occur, was it  gradually or suddenly, have you had any infections or injury that may have caused the hearing difficulties and the problems you have had to deal with.

Our Audiologist will then want to test your hearing by performing an audiogram. The test will take about 20-30 minutes. You will be played a series of sounds through headphones and be asked to respond in some way that you have heard the sound normally by pressing a button every time no matter how quiet or faint.

This is done in one ear and then the other, as the results can be different. Depending on the result there may be other tests required, but this will be explained at the time.

Our Audiologist will measure your hearing in two key ways;

  • volume or level – measured in decibels (dB)
  • pitch or frequency (whether it’s high or low) – measured in hertz (Hz)

Our Audiologist will probably refer to these two things when they explain the results of your test to you. If you would like a copy of the test, it’s best to ask on the day.

Should you require hearing aids, hidden hearing aids offer discreet, high-performance solutions for those with hearing loss. Designed to fit comfortably inside the ear canal, they are virtually invisible to others, allowing users to feel more confident in social and professional settings. Despite their small size, these devices are equipped with advanced technology, such as directional microphones, noise reduction, and Bluetooth compatibility, ensuring clear sound and an enhanced listening experience. Hidden hearing aids blend seamlessly into daily life, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits without drawing attention.

Wireless earphones offer a convenient and modern audio experience, freeing users from tangled cords and allowing greater freedom of movement. Ideal for workouts, commuting, or multitasking at home, they provide seamless connectivity to devices via Bluetooth, often with quick pairing and stable connections. Many models also feature built-in microphones, noise cancellation, and touch controls, enhancing both sound quality and usability. With compact, lightweight designs and long battery life, wireless earphones combine comfort, portability, and performance, making them a practical choice for everyday use.

In order to see one of our Audiologists you must be referred by a Kingsbridge North West Hospital ENT Consultant and be 4 years and older. Your results will be forwarded to your referring Consultant and a review appointment will be arranged to discuss the results and recommend and necessary treatment.
