If non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, pain relief medication, or steroid injections are no longer effective, your consultant at Kingsbridge Private Hospital may recommend ankle fusion surgery. This procedure can relieve pain, improve stability, and make everyday movement easier.
Knowing what happens through the ankle fusion surgery process can help you feel prepared and more at ease. Here is what you can expect:
Before Surgery
You will have a consultation and scans to confirm that ankle fusion is the best option for your condition. Your consultant will explain the procedure, recovery process, and any potential risks, helping you feel fully prepared. You may receive advice on pre-surgery exercises, medication changes, and preparing your home for a safe recovery.
During Surgery
Ankle fusion surgery is carried out under general or spinal anaesthetic, so you will not feel any pain. Your surgeon will remove the damaged cartilage from your ankle joint and fuse the bones together using screws, plates, or rods to hold them in place. The goal is to stop painful movement, improve stability, and allow the bones to heal as one solid joint.
Surgery typically takes 2–3 hours, depending on the complexity of your case.
After Surgery
Most patients stay in hospital for 1–3 days. Your leg will be supported in a cast or boot, and you will need to avoid putting weight on the ankle for several weeks. Physiotherapy will begin to teach you safe ways to move and support your recovery. Full fusion and recovery can take 3–6 months, but many patients notice pain relief and improved stability much sooner.
Our consultants are specialists with years of experience. From your first consultation through to your recovery, you’ll be under the care of experts who are dedicated to helping you achieve the best possible results.
