Ankle arthroscopy can offer a faster recovery and less scarring compared to traditional open surgery, as only small incisions are made. It allows your surgeon to see inside the joint with clarity and treat a range of problems during the same procedure.
For many patients, the result is reduced pain, better mobility, and a quicker return to daily activities.
At Kingsbridge, you’ll be in the expert hands of UK and Ireland’s top ankle surgery consultants.
The approach to ankle arthroscopy depends on the problem being treated. The procedure may be used to remove loose bone or cartilage fragments, clean inflamed tissue, repair damaged cartilage, or address ligament injuries.
Your consultant will explain the most suitable option for your condition and discuss the expected outcomes.
Knowing what happens at each stage of ankle arthroscopy surgery can help you feel prepared and more at ease. Here’s what you can expect:
Before Surgery
You will meet your consultant to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and treatment plan. You may need scans or tests to confirm the cause of your ankle problem. Your consultant will explain how to prepare for surgery.
During Surgery
The operation is usually carried out under general or regional anaesthetic. Your surgeon makes small incisions around the ankle to insert a camera and surgical instruments. The joint is examined and any necessary treatment is performed.
After Surgery
You will be monitored as you recover from anaesthetic. Most patients go home the same day. Your consultant will advise you on pain relief, wound care, and when to start moving the ankle. You may need physiotherapy to support recovery. Follow-up appointments will check your progress and healing.
