BLOG: Behind the Lens of Cataract Surgery at Kingsbridge Private Hospital

24th, Jun 2025

Cataracts are common but that doesn’t make them any less disruptive. Blurry vision, glare, dull colours and difficulty driving at night are all symptoms that can creep up gradually which can affect your confidence, independence and day-to-day life. At Kingsbridge Private Hospital, we see thousands of patients from across the island of Ireland each year for cataract surgery. Many arrive nervous about the idea of surgery and leave wondering why they waited so long!

Leading Cataract Treatment Provider in Northern Ireland

Behind every successful cataract procedure is a team of experts dedicated to exceptional care. “We are proud to have a team of some of the best Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons on the island working with us to deliver cutting-edge solutions in state-of-the-art facilities that deliver outstanding patient care before, during and after patient procedures.” -  Anthony McKenna, General Manager at Kingsbridge North West

“If it were not for Kingsbridge Private Hospital and the treatment I received from my Consultant and his team, I would to this day be unable to drive in the evening. Thanks to the fabulous people who looked after me.” – Aileen, Cataract Patient, ROI

Our Facilities

We are continually investing in facilities and technology to meet growing healthcare needs. In 2023 we opened Kingsbridge Eye Clinics in Kingsbridge Diagnostic & Treatment Centre in Belfast and Kingsbridge North West in Ballykelly. Our Belfast clinic houses an advanced Ophthalmology Theatre and a Day Procedure Unit which contains seven patient pods. Kingsbridge North West have a designated theatre incorporating specific air-changing features for specialist eye surgery, providing comfortable and convenient treatment for patients from across the North West, Mid Ulster, Donegal and beyond!

What Is Cataract Surgery Really Like?

For many patients, the idea of eye surgery sounds daunting until they realise how quick and straightforward the procedure actually is.

  • It usually takes less than 30 minutes per eye
  • You’re awake but comfortable throughout thank to numbing drops
  • Most people go home the same day and return to light activities with 24 hours

Patients often describe the moment their vision clear as “life-changing”. Colours become brighter, reading becomes easier, driving feels safer and confidence starts to return.

You Don’t Need to Wait for ‘Bad Enough’

Cataracts don’t improve on their own and yet, many patients delay surgery because they feel their vision isn’t “bad enough yet”. But clearer sight doesn’t just mean better vision, it can mean better quality of life.

If you’re starting to notice symptoms, it may be time to book an assessment.
