Prostate Cancer Awareness

Last week we updated our blog following the news that Angelina Jolie recently underwent a double mastectomy to reduce her risks of breast cancer.

She was diagnosed as carrying one of the BRCA genes which greatly increased her risks of developing breast cancer in the future, so she opted to have surgery which reduced the risk from around 80% to 5%.

What many people may not have realised is that the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can also greatly increase the risk of men developing cancer of the prostate or breast tissue.

While breast cancer in men is nowhere near as common (around 370 cases a year according to Cancer Research), prostate cancer on the other hand affects over 40,000 men in the UK every year; almost the same amount of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer (around 48,000).

Prostate health can be a topic that many men shy away from but we urge all men, especially those over 50, to keep a regular check on your prostate health and if you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical advice:

  • Having to rush to the toilet to pass urine
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Passing urine more often than usual, especially at night
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Blood in the urine or semen

At 3fivetwo Healthcare, we offer a comprehensive medical service for men’s health and also offer a complete prostate screening service with one of our expert consultants.
