Miscarriage and Pregnancy Planning Clinic

A miscarriage of pregnancy can be a heart-breaking and often confusing situation for any couple trying for a baby.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 pregnancies will end in miscarriage. For some women this can be a recurring problem resulting in multiple miscarriages. It is at this point that many couples seek medical advice and support from a specialist to help them in their journey to have a successful pregnancy.

How we can help

At Kingsbridge Private Hospital, Dr David Hunter, Consultant Gynaecologist, offers couples suffering from recurrent miscarriages, specialist advice, assessment and treatment where possible. He welcomes patients who have suffered a single miscarriage but does recommend that the service may be more suitable for patients who have had two or more miscarriages.

Our team of Specialists recognise that a miscarriage can be an extremely stressful time for both partners, it can put a lot of stress on a relationship and leave a lot of unanswered questions. Couples often want to understand why this is happening and if treatment is available to prevent it’s reoccurrence. At the Miscarriage and Pregnancy Planning Clinic, our Specialists aim to help both male and female partners understand why they have struggled to have a successful pregnancy and endeavour to help them via a number of diagnosis and treatment methods.

The Miscarriage and Pregnancy Planning Clinic offers patients:

  • Initial consultation to assess the nature and extent of the problem
  • Examination
  • Transvaginal Ultrasound Assessment of the uterus to exclude any structural cause of a miscarriage such as fibroids, anatomical abnormalities, ovarian cysts or more unusual defects.
  • SpermComet Test – The SpermComet® is an enhanced semen analysis test that can measure DNA damage in every single sperm helping to identify the quality of the sperm which can often be a key factor when couples have been trying for a baby for some time without success.
  • Review appointment – Where couples sit down with their Specialist to assess results of investigations and thoroughly discuss the next steps with regard to advice and treatment options.

Following the patient’s review appointment, there are a number of treatment options which may be presented by the Specialist including:

  • Prescriptions for anticoagulants – blood thinning treatments to encourage implantation of the embryo
  • Immunotherapy – a potential intervention in women with Natural Killer Cells
  • Assisted conception using Fertility Treatment
  • Additional early pregnancy scans – intensive surveillance in a subsequent pregnancy which can be reassuring and supportive
