Group B Strep Testing

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a bacterium that can be carried by women in the rectum or vagina. There are usually no symptoms or harmful effects for a carrier, until she is pregnant, when there may be a significant risk of infecting her new born baby, which can be fatal.

Group B Strep (GBS) Testing – GP Nurse Led

Group B Strep (GBS) is a common type of bacteria that many people carry naturally, often without symptoms. While it is usually harmless in adults, it can be passed to a baby during labour and, in rare cases, may lead to serious infection in newborns.

Who should be tested?
We offer independent GBS testing for pregnant women between 36 – 38 weeks of gestation, which is the recommended time to ensure the most accurate result before delivery.

What does the test involve?
The test is simple and quick, involving a swab from the vagina and rectum. Results are typically available within a few days.

Cost
The cost of the test is £110 for swabs taken by a nurse in clinic, or £87 for a postal kit. These prices include the test kit and laboratory analysis.

How to book
Booking is easy – simply contact our GP clinic directly by phone – 028 9066 5858 and quote ‘GP’ or email [email protected] to get an appointment / postal kit arranged.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss whether GBS testing is right for you, our team is here to help.
