Mr Laurence Cusick is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in primary hip and knee replacement surgery.

He has extensive experience in joint replacement procedures and performs a high volume of hip and knee replacements, including bilateral joint replacement surgery and selected day-case arthroplasty. He introduced ‘Enhanced Recovery’ and day case surgery to Kingsbridge which can aid recovery and is beneficial for home convalescing.

Mr Cusick was born in Belfast, where he still lives with his wife and children.  He is solely based in private practice at Kingsbridge Private Hospital, where he provides specialist orthopaedic care for patients across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Mr Cusick is the highest volume surgeon at Kingsbridge, successfully performing over 600 hip and knee replacements per year.

He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2001 (MB BCh BAO) before completing his basic surgical training and gaining a place on the Northern Ireland Higher Surgical Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

During his specialist training he undertook an 18-month fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery at the Primary Joint Unit in Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast. During this time, he also completed a postgraduate research degree (MPhil) from Queen’s University Belfast in 2009.

Mr Cusick was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCS) and later achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS T&O) in 2012.

Following completion of his specialist training, Mr Cusick undertook further international subspecialty fellowships in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery, as well as bone and soft tissue sarcoma surgery.

This included:

  • A one-year allograft fellowship in revision arthroplasty and musculoskeletal oncology in Perth and Fremantle, Western Australia, working with Professor P Yates, Professor D Wood and Professor R Carey Smith.
  • A six-month fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, working with Professor L Jeys and Professor R Grimer, focusing on complex revision arthroplasty and orthopaedic oncology.

Mr Cusick was appointed a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2014 and now works exclusively in private practice at Kingsbridge Private Hospital, where he specialises in hip and knee replacement surgery and the management of degenerative joint conditions. As he says, he is is ‘very proud and privileged to have performed life changing surgery on patients who have come from every county on this island to get his expert opinion and treatment, to Kingsbridge where he works exclusively.’
