Kingsbridge Bright Beginnings Programme Celebrates Success Supporting Young People from Harberton in the Workplace

A pioneering partnership between Harberton Special School and Kingsbridge Foundation has culminated in the successful completion of the Bright Beginnings Programme, a unique initiative designed to provide meaningful workplace experience for young people with additional needs.

Over an 18-month period, the programme saw seven students, aged 18–19, undertake supported work placements across multiple departments within Kingsbridge Private Hospitals in Belfast.  Each student was paired with dedicated staff mentors, enabling them to develop confidence, skills, and independence in a real working environment.

The programme was developed by Michelle Bell, Charity Lead at the Kingsbridge Foundation and Ciara McCullough, Senior Department Leader, at Harberton in collaboration with Orchardville and Sport Changes Life, who supported both students and staff through tailored training and workshops. These sessions focused on essential areas including workplace skills, health and safety, communication, and team building.

The students have now completed the programme and were recently recognised at a graduation event atThe Doyen, celebrating their achievements as they progress to the next stage of their education, including pathways through Belfast Met and other organisations.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr James Curran MBE, Principal of Harberton Special School, said:

“This partnership between Harberton and Kingsbridge has been phenomenal. At the beginning, the young people were understandably nervous about stepping outside their comfort zones, but we had full confidence in the support they would receive, and it was exceptional.

“So many staff invested their time and efforts in ‘buddying up’ with our young people.  Listening to them, recognising their strengths and really building on those strengths whilst giving them real world experiences.  I am excited for what comes next, as there are so many more young people with so much to offer.”

Dr Martin Shields, Chair of the Kingsbridge Foundation, added:

“Our relationship with Harberton began nearly two years ago through an initial funding request but quickly developed into something much more meaningful. Rather than simply providing funding, we wanted to create a partnership that delivered long-term impact, and that’s how Bright Beginnings was born.”

The students worked across a range of departments including marketing, front of house, estates and facilities, medical records, transport and catering.

“While the programme challenged the students to develop new skills in very different environments, it also had a profound impact on our teams. It has been a privilege to see their confidence grow week by week, while our staff have been equally inspired by their enthusiasm and commitment.”

Since launching, Bright Beginnings has delivered significant benefits for both students and staff. Participants gained hands-on experience, improved interpersonal skills, and gained the self-belief to work more independently, including in everyday activities. One student who had a real fear of hospitals and clinicians made exceptional progress.  Her longtime carer, Linda Higgin said:

“Caitlin was a bit apprehensive about the medical side of her work experience but absolutely thrived working ‘front of house’ welcoming patients and often referred to her colleagues at Kingsbridge like ‘family’.  We saw a massive difference with her outside of the programme too.  She grew in confidence and attending medical appointments were less stressful for her.  She even had the courage to go to her dental appointments, which used to be difficult experience for her,” said Linda.”

Reflecting on the success of the Bright Beginnings programme, Dr Martin Shields said the initiative has exceeded expectations:

“What began as a simple project has evolved into something far more impactful. It has strengthened relationships between Kingsbridge, education providers and charity partners.  The enthusiasm, unique perspectives and dedication these young people brought have enriched our workplace, strengthened our culture, and demonstrated the real value of inclusion.  I’ve no doubt it will continue to grow and leave a lasting legacy.”
