Sheena Colhoun’s Profile

Sheena graduated in 2003 from the University of Ulster, Jordanstown and has worked as an Occupational Therapist, specialising in field of hand therapy for approximately 18 of those years in NHS.

As a basic grade OT, Sheena worked in the Royal Victora Hospital in Belfast for three and a half years completing rotations in all core areas including trauma, hand therapy and burns/plastics.

Sheena relocated to the South of England for 12 years working in Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals and Dorset County hospital. In these posts she treated all types of hand therapy patients from a wide variety of sources including post op trauma and elective surgery patients, rheumatology, A&E, GP, regional plastics referrals from Salisbury and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

She is enthusiastic about the field of hand therapy and continually strives to maintain high standard of patient care and service development. In the past she has developed a hand therapy roles in A+E, pre-op education/outcome measure group for hand surgery patients and was the principal investigator in DCH for OTTER trail – RCT multicentre research trial investigating the benefits of conservative management of OA of thumb.

Sheena worked as an extended scope practitioner in orthopaedic departments in England, assessing new patients referred from GP,  requesting x-rays, and listing patients for hand surgery. She has completed MSc module in injection therapy in Southampton, enabling her to administer steroid injection in her ESP role.

Returning to Northern Ireland, Sheena has been working as clinical specialist OT in Altnagelvin, treating T&O patients and privately in Kingsbridge North West. She leads a hand therapy team and is committed to continuous learning and teaching of junior members of team. She is currently a member of an advanced practice network of hand therapists and is developing wound care competencies for BAHT.
