Dr Zsolt Bodnar’s Profile
Mr. Bodnar is a highly experienced Consultant General and Bariatric Surgeon with an extensive international background in clinical practice, research, and surgical leadership.
He graduated from the University of Debrecen Medical School, Hungary, where he completed his specialist surgical training and was appointed Consultant in 2007. He later pursued advanced training in bariatric and metabolic surgery in Spain, where he became a specialist and served as Coordinator of Bariatric Surgical Services before relocating to Ireland.
In 2016, Mr. Bodnar joined the HSE as a Consultant Surgeon at Letterkenny University Hospital. In 2017, he established Ireland’s first Metabolic Surgery Department, a landmark achievement recognised with the Saolta Healthcare Group Staff Recognition Award in 2019.
Mr. Bodnar holds a PhD (2017) and has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland since 2018. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Galway and an Honorary Associate Professor at Maastricht University, with a strong commitment to surgical education and mentorship.
He is the founder of the Irish Metabolic Surgery Conference and maintains an active research profile with regular publications in bariatric and metabolic surgery. He is also recognised as a key opinion leader in the diagnosis and management of abdominal compartment syndrome.
As a Consultant General Surgeon, Mr. Bodnar provides a full spectrum of bariatric procedures, delivering patient centred care with a strong focus on safety, innovation, and compassion.
