Asif Orakzai’s Profile

Mr Orakzai is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Western Health and Social Care Trust, based at the Altnagelvin Area Hospital, Londonderry, Omagh Hospital & Primary Care Centre and the Mid Ulster Hospital, Magherafelt. 

Mr Orakzai specialises in treating anterior segment conditions such as cataract surgery, as well as the Macular Lead for retinal conditions.

Most of his training has taken place in Ireland and Edinburgh. Mr Orakzai is an Honorary Lecturer at the Queens University and Northern Ireland Optometry School and his specialist interests include cataract surgery, lid surgery, lid cosmetic procedures, and removal of lid cysts / lumps.

​In particular, he is also a  specialist in the management of complex medical retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusions, uveitis, vasculitis and retinal tears/ holes. He regularly performs laser procedures such as YAG capsulotomies to clear up lens after historic cataract surgery (Posterior capsular opacification, PCO).

  • MB BS University of Peshawar – Khyber Medical College 1992.
  • Fellow in Vitreo – Retinal Surgery – University College Hospital, Cork, Ireland 2007- 2009.
  • Fellowship Of RCS in Ophthalmology – Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh 2000.
