Dr. Shaun McGowan’s Profile

Dr McGowan is a consultant gynaecologist working in the Belfast Trust where he co-leads the endometriosis and complex benign gynaecology service. 

Dr McGowan has particular interest in the management of endometriosis, fibroids and heavy menstrual bleeding having undertaken a fellowship in advanced minimal access surgery at the Guildford Endometriosis centre in Surrey under the mentorship of renowned surgeon, Mr Andrew Kent.  He has completed further advanced training courses including at IRCAD in Strasbourg maintaining his skills and remaining up to date in current managements. 

Dr McGowan offers vaginal ultrasound, diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy, including outpatient hysteroscopy and laparoscopic minimal access surgery as well as open surgery if required. 

Dr McGowan has been involved in research on the management of severe endometriosis and has published on a number of topics as first author in peer reviewed journals. He has presented on many occasions at a national and international level. He currently sits as a co-opted member of the British Society of  Gynaecological Endoscopy Senior Council.

Dr McGowan has an interest in teaching and training and has been faculty for a number of courses at a national level and been awarded the NI trainer of the year in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2023.

  • Fellowship in Advanced Minimal Access Surgery, Guildford Endometriosis Centre, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, 2019-2021.
