Dr Patrick Allen’ Profile

Dr Patrick Allen is a Consultant Gastroenterologist working in the Ulster Hospital, South Eastern Trust. He graduated from Queens University Belfast in 2002 with a distinction in Final MB Medicine and Surgery.

Dr Allen completed his initial training in NI and then a completed a fellowship in St Vincent’s University Hospital, Melbourne in 2009-2010 in Advanced Endoscopy, GI Research and Complex Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. He has been a Consultant since 2010 in Gastroenterology. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edin). 

Dr. Allen has been a Consultant in the Northern Trust (2010-12) and then South Eastern Trust (2012- present) and manages in and out-patients with Gastroenterology problems. He is interested in Advanced Endoscopy and particularly complex bowel polyp removal.

He has been Chair of the NI Research Network for the past 5 years, and Lead the Gastroenterology Research Team in the South Eastern Trust.

He sits on committees at the Ulster Society, Irish Society and also the British Society of Gastroenterology. Dr. Allen has been involved with guidelines writing for the British Society of Gastroenterology  and Quality Improvement for inflammatory Bowel Diseases. He has presented at National and International Research Meetings on Advanced Endoscopy and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and has over 50 publications in peer reviewed Journals, and contributed to 4 book chapters.

His specialist interests are functional bowel diseases (IBS), inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohns, ulcerative colitis), small bowel endoscopy (gastroscopy [OGD], flexible sigmoidoscopy and therapeutic colonoscopy.

  • Distinction in Final MB Medicine and Surgery (Queens University Belfast – 2002)
  • Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Endoscopy (St Vincent’s University Hospital, Melbourne – 2010)
