Dr Michelle Doherty’s Profile

Dr Doherty is an experienced psychiatrist, specialising in the disorders affecting older people. She has worked in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England, and in both the NHS and independent sectors.

Until 2019 she held a substantive post as Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry with Dorset Healthcare University Foundation Trust, and held responsibilities across community and inpatient settings. From 2019 onwards she provided inpatient care for older people with complex needs who required a secure setting. She has expertise in the diagnosis and management of dementia, particularly when complicated by co-morbid conditions.

She has led multidisciplinary teams over many years, and has held positions of clinical leadership as an NHS Consultant, including as an NHS appraiser.

She has extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience, and held posts of Clinical Sub Dean in Psychiatry with the University of Southampton, and Associate Professor with the University of Grenada, USA.

For several years she had a successful medicolegal practice providing reports for the courts, including assessments of mental capacity. She has expertise in giving evidence in court. She has been appointed by the Department of Justice to sit as a Medical Member on Mental Health Review Tribunal panels.

She has been successfully revalidated by the GMC in 2014, 2019 and 2024.

Current NHS/HSE Posts

I worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the NHS in England until 2019, across community and inpatient settings, across adult and old age services. From 2019 to 2024 I worked in the independent sector, providing inpatient care to older people with complex needs, in a secure setting. I sit as a Medical Member on Mental health Review Tribunals in England.
