Dr Gary Meenagh’s Profile
Dr Gary Meenagh is a Consultant Rheumatologist covering the Northern Trust region, based at Antrim Hospital and also performing clinics at Braid Valley Hospital in Ballymena. Within the trust he is clinical director for several specialties including rheumatology, cardiology, respiratory medicine and dermatology.
Dr Meenagh studied medicine at Queen’s University Belfast where he graduated with Honours and trained in Rheumatology at Musgrave Park Hospital and at the University of Ancona, Italy. In 2005 he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine from Queen’s University Belfast.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology and the Irish Society for Rheumatology.
He is a member of the organising committee for the Advanced Rheumatology Sonography website promoting the diffusion of musculoskeletal ultrasound within rheumatology in Europe.
Currently he acts as an Educational Supervisor for Queens University Belfast overseeing the training needs of junior doctors at Antrim Hospital.
Dr Meenagh has a wide research portfolio including osteoarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and early inflammatory arthritis. He has collaborated widely with co-workers at the University of Ancona, Italy publishing articles regularly on musculoskeletal ultrasound in rheumatology.
The clinical service offered by Dr Meenagh at Kingsbridge Private Hospital encompasses all aspects of adult rheumatology including rapid diagnosis and treatment of all types of inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis), soft tissue disorders (frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis etc), connective tissue disorders and osteoporosis are also within his clinical remit.
After training in Rheumatology in Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast Dr Meenagh also completed a year of sub specialty training in musculoskeletal ultrasound at the University of Ancona, Italy in 2005.
He has published widely in medical journals relating to a variety of rheumatic disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus and osteoporosis. Dr Meenagh was awarded an MD by Queens University Belfast in 2005 and subsequently a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education by Queens in 2013.
His first consultant post was in Bristol, UK before returning to Northern Ireland in 2007 to take up his current post in the Northern Trust.Presently Dr Meenagh is Clinical Lead in Rheumatology for the Northern Trust covering clinics in Antrim, Ballymena and Coleraine.
Dr Meenagh’s special interests include Musculoskeletal ultrasound – used both in diagnosis and therapeutic intervention in inflammatory arthritis and other soft tissue rheumatic disorders. Management of inflammation arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis with immunosuppressive therapy. Joint and soft tissue injection/ aspiration. Treatment of osteoarthritis, gout and osteoporosis.
