Dr. Christopher Southwell is a consultant in Old Age Psychiatry and Specialises in Dementia and Cognitive Disorder Management.  Dr. Southwell has a passion for improving the lives of individuals living with dementia and related cognitive disorders. With a remarkable career spanning over 7 years, Dr. Southwell is at the forefront of dementia care and treatment.

For the past 7 years, Dr. Southwell has been a dedicated Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, stationed at the esteemed Bluestone Unit within Craigavon Area Hospital. In this role, Dr. Southwell has taken on the critical responsibility of managing a functional psychiatry and dementia caseload for the Craigavon and Banbridge Area, caring for over 700 patients. This extensive experience has helped develop his expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of dementia and related cognitive disorders.

In 2022, Dr. Southwell embraced the role of Clinical Director for Psychiatry of Old Age and Memory Services within the Southern Trust. This signifies not only an impressive career milestone but also a commitment to elevating the standards of care in the field of old age psychiatry and dementia management.

Dr. Southwell is not only responsible for outpatient care of this special population but also plays a crucial role in offering clinical supervision to the community mental health team for older individuals in the area. This level of involvement ensures that every patient receives the highest standard of care, tailored to their unique needs.

In addition to this, Dr. Southwell conducts memory assessment outpatient clinics dedicated to diagnosing and managing patients with dementia. The compassion and expertise Dr. Southwell brings to these clinics help guide patients and their families through the challenging journey of living with cognitive disorders.

Dr. Southwell is a proud alumnus of Queen’s University, Belfast, where he earned his medical degree and completed his consultant training in Old Age Psychiatry in Northern Ireland.
