Assoc. Prof. Richard Fiala’s Profile

Mr Fiala holds dual qualifications as a general surgeon and a urologist. He gained experience in world renowned training hospitals including The Mayo Clinic and has over 27 years experience at consultant level.

He established a specialised centre for the treatment of enuresis in children (bedwetting) in addition to a centre for the management of urological conditions post spinal injury.  He subsequently focussed on the treatment of bladder and prostate cancer, major pelvic surgeries and reconstructions, as a member of the EORTC (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer) genitourinary group.

He performed one of the largest number of reconstructions of urethral posterior post traumatic distraction defects.  His involvement in the above-mentioned areas in addition to renal transplantation, led to his appointment as the chairman of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant.

In addition to his academic and research role as a lecturer in medical schools, he also lectured at international post graduate level at the European School of Urology.

He was appointed as consultant in 2009 to the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, which later merged to become North West Urology Team, located in Altnagelvin.
