World Ovarian Cancer Day 2026: Know the Signs, Take Action

Belfast | 8th May 2026

Thursday 8 May marks World Ovarian Cancer Day 2026, a campaign focused on raising awareness of ovarian cancer a disease that is often diagnosed late due to its subtle and easily overlooked symptoms.

At Kingsbridge Private Hospital, we are committed to supporting women with expert-led care and encouraging early action when it comes to health concerns.

Why Awareness Matters

Ovarian cancer symptoms can be vague, which means they are sometimes mistaken for less serious conditions. However, early detection can significantly improve outcomes, making awareness key.

Know the Symptoms

It’s important to be aware of persistent changes, including:

  • Bloating
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Feeling full quickly
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Needing to urinate more often

If these symptoms are ongoing or unusual for you, it’s important to speak to a GP.

Speaking about Ovarian Cancer Day, GP Lead of our Women’s Health Hub, Dr Lisa Neligan, comments:

“Ovarian cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the UK with roughly 7,500 new cases diagnosed annually.

About 1 in 50 (2%) of women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer during their lifetime. It is most common in women over 50, and early diagnosis greatly improves survival.

A CA125 is a widely available blood test in the UK that measures a protein that is often raised in ovarian cancer, generally used to investigate persistent symptoms (bloating, pelvic pain, feeling full quickly, urinating frequently).

If this is raised, you will be referred for further imaging and follow up with a gynaecologist.”

This World Ovarian Cancer Day, don’t ignore the signs. Trust your instincts and seek advice if something doesn’t feel right.

At Kingsbridge Private Hospital, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
