International Self-Care Day: Looking After Your Health Is One of the Greatest Acts of Self-Care

When we think about self-care, we often picture taking time to relax, eating well or exercising. While these are all important, one of the most meaningful ways to care for yourself is by taking charge of your health.

This International Self-Care Day (24th July), we’re encouraging everyone to think beyond the traditional idea of self-care and consider the simple healthcare decisions that can make a lasting difference. From booking a routine GP appointment to attending preventative health screenings or prioritising postnatal wellbeing, investing in your health today can help you enjoy a healthier tomorrow.

Routine Check-Ups: A Simple Act of Self-Care

Life can be busy, and it’s easy to put your own health at the bottom of the to-do list. Many people only visit their GP when they’re feeling unwell, but regular check-ups can help identify concerns before they become more serious.

Routine appointments offer an opportunity to:

  • Discuss any new or ongoing symptoms
  • Review existing health conditions
  • Monitor blood pressure or other health indicators
  • Receive lifestyle advice tailored to your needs
  • Gain reassurance and peace of mind

Making time for your health is an investment in your future wellbeing. Even if you’re feeling well, a routine check-up can provide valuable insight into your overall health.

Postnatal Wellbeing: Caring for Mum Matters Too

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting time, but it’s also a period of significant physical and emotional change for mothers. While much of the focus naturally shifts to caring for a newborn, it’s equally important that mothers receive the support they need.

Postnatal wellbeing is about more than recovering after birth. It includes monitoring physical recovery, supporting mental health, managing fatigue, discussing feeding concerns and addressing any symptoms that don’t feel quite right.

Seeking advice from your GP after having a baby isn’t a sign that something is wrong, it’s an important part of looking after yourself, so you can continue to care for your family.

Prevention Is Powerful

Many long-term health conditions develop gradually, often without obvious symptoms in the early stages. That’s why preventative healthcare plays such an important role in self-care.

Regular health checks and screening appointments can help identify risk factors early and provide opportunities to make positive lifestyle changes before problems develop.

Depending on your age, lifestyle and family history, preventative healthcare may include:

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Blood tests
  • Diabetes risk assessments
  • Cholesterol monitoring
  • Weight management support
  • Lifestyle and wellbeing advice

Taking proactive steps today can help reduce the risk of future health complications and support healthier ageing.

Here is some GP Expert Insight from Dr Roger Brown:

“Self-care is not something that we are good at in general. It is not a selfish thing to care for yourself. Physically or mentally. I have often told patients that caring for their own health in a busy life is not selfish but self-aware.

Anyone who has travelled on an airline will have been given the instructions that if an emergency arises and Oxygen is required we should attend to our own mask before helping anyone else. This is true in relation to self-care too. If we are not self-caring, we can end up ill and not only not able to help those who depend us but also need help from them instead.”
