The Fit 4 Life Centre on the Donegall Road, Belfast was officially launched earlier this year by Nelson McCausland MLA, Minister for Social Development.

The Fit 4 Life Centre is a community based fitness studio and was motivated by a desire to encourage local people to engage in physical activity in a relaxed atmosphere, with a view to tackling health inequalities and to support those living with health problems and conditions. The Fit 4 Life Centre is run by Greater Village Regeneration Trust as a social enterprise for the people of the South-West Belfast Neighbourhood Renewal Area.

The centre hopes to provide a space where people can be educated about living a healthy lifestyle while making small changes that can have a big impact on their overall health.

A government Census released by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA) in 2012 revealed that over one in five people in Northern Ireland (21%) have a long-term health problem or disability which limited their day-to-day activities. From the figures revealed, mobility or dexterity problems accounted for 11% of those affected by long-term health problems and pain or discomfort accounted for 10% of those affected.

At the health event held on Monday 29th September in the Fit 4 Life Centre, which tied in with World Heart Day, individual health checks were made available for the local community.  The focus was to identify problems people may have with their health and provide information regarding the changes they could make in their lifestyle to improve their health and long term prognosis.

Private GP with the 3fivetwo Group, Dr Aileen McPhillips who provided health checks at the event said, “There are many people in Northern Ireland who are suffering from long and short-term health problems and not taking action to remedy it. By attending this event at the Fit 4 Life Centre, we hope to have provided some education and advice about the available options. In many cases, a simple lifestyle adjustment can result in very beneficial changes in a person’s overall health.”

The Fit 4 Life Centre is open Monday to Saturday and offers a wide range of classes, open gym sessions and private hire.

Dr Aileen McPhillips continued by saying, “At the 3fivetwo Group we are very proud to work with the local community to provide health awareness. Our Private GP service at 3fivetwo offers quick access for any health concerns and we always work to facilitate our patients as best we can. Attending the Fit 4 Life event has been great and the local community have really showed their support.”
