3fivetwo Group Now Offer Lifesaving Meningitis B Vaccine
The 3fivetwo Group become one of the first private healthcare companies in the UK to offer the new vaccine. Dr Lisa Neligan tells us why the vaccine is a step forward in the treatment of this deadly disease.
For decades, Meningitis B has been the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK and Ireland.
An average of 1870 people contract meningitis B each year and one in 10 of them die. About a quarter of all survivors of meningitis B are left with life altering after effects such as brain damage, limb or hearing loss. Children under 5 are most at risk. Meningitis B kills more children under 5 in the UK each year than any other infectious disease.
Meningitis can kill in hours if untreated and if treated. In a third of cases it can cause brain damage, hearing loss and loss of limbs.
Vaccines are the only way to prevent it and have almost eliminated some other kinds of meningitis. A new vaccine for bacterial meningitis type B is now available privately in the UK after receiving approval and licensing from the European Medicines Agency (EMA). While there have been effective vaccines against other common strains of bacterial meningitis, until now there has been no vaccine against this highly aggressive B strain.
Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.
The development of a safe and effective meningitis B vaccine is the culmination of over 20 years research and represents a significant breakthrough in disease prevention. It has been tested in clinical trials involving over 8000 people and was found to have similar levels of safety and tolerability as other routine childhood vaccines.
Septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease.
Unfortunately, this vaccine is expensive and has not been added to the vaccination schedule as of yet as was deemed not to be cost effective by the government at the present time. Dr Neligan, GP at 3fivetwo Healthcare who has witnessed first-hand the devastation caused by Meningitis B, would like to see the vaccine introduced into routine immunisation programmes so that it is free for all who need it, as this is the fairest and most cost-effective way to combat this deadly illness. In the interim this vaccination is available privately from 3fivetwo Healthcare. The Meningitis research foundation have welcomed this vaccine and are currently lobbying the government to get it given free on the NHS to children but it doesn’t look set to happen anytime soon.
Meningitis is usually bacterial or viral, and occasionally is due to fungal infections, although almost any microbe can cause it.
It would be advisable for parents of those under 2 to request it privately from their GP so it can be tied in with their routine vaccination schedule and avoid further appointments for injection. We are happy to provide vaccination for over 2’s or indeed for younger children if GP services are unable to provide it.
